What Is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes was once called non-insulin-dependent diabetes. This type of diabetes makes it hard for your body to use the insulin it makes. That means it can't easily turn blood sugar (also called blood glucose) into energy. As a result, your blood sugar can get too high. To keep your blood sugar under control, you need to take the following steps:

  • Test your blood sugar
  • Follow your meal plan
  • Exercise
  • Take medication if needed
  • Take care of yourself to prevent other health problems

Test Your Blood Sugar
You will most likely need to test your blood sugar each day. This tells you whether your blood sugar is within your target range.
  • Your health care team will tell you how often and when you need to test.
  • If your blood sugar is within your target range, your meal plan, exercise plan, and medication are working.
  • If your blood sugar is too high or too low, your health care team may make changes in your meal plan or adjust your medication.

Follow Your Meal Plan
Following your meal plan helps control the amount of sugar in your blood. It also helps you control your weight. Excess weight keeps your body from using its own insulin.
  • Your health care team will help you make a meal plan that works for you.
  • You don't have to give up all the foods you like. But you do need to choose foods that are low in fat and sugar.
  • You need to eat the right amount of food. And you need to eat at the same times each day.
