poliovirus (po´le-o-vi″rәs) a species of the genus Enterovirus, the etiologic agent of poliomyelitis. It is separable into three serotypes, designated types 1, 2, and 3, with type 1 being responsible for about 85 percent of all cases of paralytic poliomyelitis and for most epidemics.
