quasispecies (quah″ze-spe�sēz) one of a population of closely related genotypes coexisting as a result of mutations of the original genotype, with selective pressures causing the genotypes to assume a distribution in the center of which is the most frequent, and often fittest, genotype. The heterogeneous mixture of closely related viruses within an individual host are quasispecies.
